It was not entirely shocking that Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin was arrested Tuesday morning. Benjamin, while denying all wrongdoing, had been under investigation over a scheme to funnel fraudulent donations to a previous campaign. Media reports indicated federal prosecutors were targeting him.
But the timing of the arrest was remarkably awful for Gov. Kathy Hochul, who had picked Benjamin to be her running mate and defended him at every turn. Now she is stuck with him.
