On Friday, two people walking on the southbound tracks of the 1 line were struck and killed by a train just outside the 145th Street station in Hamilton Heights, officials said.
The tragedy is the latest in a string of deadly accidents in subway tunnels that are part of what transit officials say is a troubling uptick of trespassers on tracks. The increase is fanning city leaders’ concerns about an unruly subway system that continues to make some riders reluctant to return to it.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials said that in 2021 they logged 1,267 track intrusions, a 19% increase from the 1,094 incidents recorded in 2020. Some
