After a spring plateau, the subway system is steadily reaching ridership levels not seen since the start of the pandemic. The number of straphangers on the system Wednesday hit a peak of 3.6 million—61% of pre-pandemic levels.
The ridership high follows last week’s pandemic-era record of 16.6 million subway riders in a single week, Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials said Thursday.
Wednesday’s single-day peak surpassed the 3.5 million record set seven days prior—which itself was a ridership milestone the system had not reached since early December, before the omicron Covid-19 variant spread rapidly through the city.
