City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams upped the ante in her budget negotiation with Mayor Eric Adams by calling for $4 billion in city spending on affordable housing next year. The speaker’s housing plan nearly triples the mayor’s proposed investment for new construction and preservation.
The speaker outlined her housing vision on Sunday during her first State of the City address from York College in Queens. She tied affordable housing production to public safety and economic security and proposed a $4 billion infusion to the city capital plan, roughly $1.5 billion more per year than currently budgeted by the mayor.
