'Extreme and oppressive': Airbnb sues New York City over restrictions on short-term rentals

Critics say the growth of short-term rentals has contributed to a shortage of affordable housing for residents.

Airbnb filed a lawsuit against New York City on Thursday (1 June) over a new law it called a “de facto ban” on short-term rentals.

The company says the ordinance, which comes into effect in July, imposes arbitrary restrictions that would greatly reduce the number of people who can host rentals in the city. 

It would require owners to register with the mayor’s office, disclose who else lives in the property, and promise to comply with zoning, construction and maintenance ordinances.
