With the many entertainment choices New York City has to offer, it can be difficult to make a choice. Look no further. “On Stage” host Frank DiLella has curated a list of “must-see” shows this week, directing you to the best of Broadway, Off-Broadway and beyond.
“Purpose”
The new play “Purpose” by Tony Award-winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is now in previews at The Hayes Theatre. The show is set at the dinner table of a prominent civil rights leader and his family. Celebrated artist Phylicia Rashad makes her Broadway directorial debut with “Purpose.” And the cast includes Harry Lennix from “The Blacklist,” LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Kara Young. Opening night for “Purpose” is set for March 17.
“We Had a World”
On the Off-Broadway front, also in previews, “We Had a World” by playwright Joshua Harmon. In this new play, the audience meets Renee, played by Joanna Gleason, and Joshua, played by Andrew Barth Feldman. Renee calls on her grandson Joshua to write a play about their family. Jeanine Serralles plays Renee’s daughter Ellen. The cast recently sat down with “On Stage” to discuss the show. “We Had a World” is now playing at Manhattan Theatre Club’s New York City Center – Stage II. Opening night is March 19.

Kate Baldwin
And finally, on the cabaret front, don’t miss the one and only Kate Baldwin, who is set to return to 54 BELOW from March 6 to March 8. In her new act, “Kate Baldwin: Let’s not talk about…,” she’ll dish on things that we’re not supposed to reveal in what’s being billed as her “most personal and intimate evening yet.” And she’s set to have some fun guest performers, including Tony Award-winner Santino Fontana. Georgia Stitt serves as musical director for the evening.
