SoHo is home to what has been called the greatest collection of cast-iron architecture in the world. Most of the neighborhood’s iron structures were constructed between 1840 and 1880.
Ignoring the area’s storied history, the City Planning Commission recently voted unanimously in favor of a proposal to rezone SoHo and NoHo to allow the construction of affordable housing. That proposal had been rejected by the community board in July. The plan also was opposed by Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.
