BuzzFeed’s public debut proves to be a buzzkill

In 2014 Politico published an article headlinedThe New York Times Is Not Going to Turn Into BuzzFeed.”

The Gray Lady is ever so grateful that prediction panned out. The market value of the New York Times Co. is 11 times larger than BuzzFeed Inc.’s. $665 million.

BuzzFeed’s public debut this week is one of the year’s biggest busts. The stock has lost 46% of its value and was worth $5.87 a share heading into today. In August shares in the Times’ publisher hit an all-time high.

That’s because the Times makes a lot of money, and BuzzFeed loses it.
