Sid Simons seeks THE American Valentine in Bowery Ballroom

Looking for a wild night? A show where performers and the crowd are constantly feeding off each other’s energy? What about melodies that expand on today’s indie-rock revival? Well, Sid Simons made sure to bring that to the table on Thursday, February 27th. Local New Yorkers and dedicated fans, packed the small, but notable venue, Bowery Ballroom, to the brim.

Although newer to the music scene, Sid Simons established himself as a prominent figure with the release of his debut, Beneath the Brightest Sun, in 2024. Inspired by travels across Sydney, Shanghai and New York, Simons seeks to blend a 60s/70s style Soul and R&B with early 2000s rock. Lyrics touch upon the modern world of romance, and the questions that arise when finding love.

Around 9:15 pm, stage lights panned up to the balcony where 4 figures awaited. Sid Simons along with three others appeared decked out in “letter-boy” outfits. Old school berets, overalls and a side bag bearing an array of newspapers. Calling out into the audience, the group tossed newspaper after newspaper into the crowd. Foreshadowing the new single, “The Last American Valentine”, bold, black lettering displayed the text “Breaking News,” and “Have you seen the American Valentine?”

Murmurs spread as Sid Simons took center stage, seating himself at the sleek, electric piano. Right when Simons’ vocals and melodic piano playing reached crescendo, the rest of the band appeared alongside. The energy of the crowd rose as they broke into favorites such as “Three Days”, “Dead Ringer” and “Wendy.” Hands waving to and fro while fans pushed themselves forward, urging to create a mosh-like scene.

The atmosphere the band created was undeniably infectious. Songs began to flow more into Americana soul as Simons debuted his new single, “The Lie.” The unique lyricism became enhanced by steady guitar strumming, rhythmic drums and soothing background vocals. Calling back to the search for “America’s Valentine”, Simons announced the release of his new EP, before launching back into song. Released that very midnight, “The Last American Valentine” is currently out on all streaming platforms. This EP is softer than Simons’ other works. Focusing on an enhanced orchestral sound, paired with heart wrenching verses.

The concert ended with the band’s version of  “Train in Vain” by The Clash. Whoops and hollers danced across the venue as Simons jumped into the crowd. Still singing, stand by me into his mic, fans carried Simons upon their shoulders, pumping fits in time to the melody.

The tour continues onwards, stopping in DC, NC, GA and more, before expanding into Europe.
