The white teen who shot dead 10 black people in the race-fueled Buffalo supermarket massacre has been charged with federal hate crimes, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday.
Payton Gendron, 18, was hit with 26 counts of hate crimes and firearms offenses — some of which carry a potential death penalty — in the wake of the May 14 shooting rampage.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland, who had vowed to investigate the shooting as a hate crime and racially motivated violent extremism, traveled to the scene of the massacre on Wednesday to address the charges and visit the families of the slain victims.
