Legislative leaders on Wednesday said they’re unlikely to include an extension of mayoral control of city schools in the state’s upcoming budget, dealing a potential blow to a top priority of Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams.
“That was something that we’ve talked about being done outside of the budget,” Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins told reporters Wednesday in Albany.
The budget is due April 1, but the Legislature will be in session through June. Some lawmakers have pushed the governor to strip out some policies outside of the spending bill, preferring to vote on them piecemeal. Mayoral control could still be extended outside of a budget
