Mayor Eric Adams’ recent appointment of Andre Mitchell as the city’s “gun czar” continues a pattern of administration hires who carry significant baggage into their new roles. Mitchell was implicated in a 2019 Department of Investigation probe, accused of mishandling city funds and hiring family members to positions at his antiviolence nonprofit, Man Up.
Mitchell is one of several Adams appointments who have a controversial background, some of whom have been subject to investigation.
Adams announced last week that Mitchell will co-chair a new gun violence prevention task force with Sheena Wright, deputy mayor for strategic initiatives, to help the administration address a rise in shootings.
