Homeless shelter opens along Billionaires Row

Surrounded by a few of Manhattan’s most exclusive addresses is a homeless shelter that opened its doors last week after three years of litigation to keep it from bringing homeless New Yorkers to Billionaires Row.

The shelter, on West 58th Street, is adjacent to the back entrance of JDS Development’s tower at 111 W. 57th St. and down the street from Vornado’s billion-dollar condo development at 220 Central Park South. 

Members of the West 58th Street Coalition, a group of residents, spent nearly $300,000 to keep it from opening, claiming in lawsuits that the building was too old and too dangerous to safely accommodate 80 shelter residents.
