Nearly a year ago, when I became chief operating officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, I joined the legions of people who started a new job remotely.
I was excited to meet my colleagues and work for such a venerable institution. But back then, as I sat at my dining room table three time zones from New York City, I felt disconnected. Only in the summer of 2021—after I had moved my family across the country and met some of my coworkers inside our historic Liberty Street headquarters—did I feel a true sense of belonging.
