Why the video feeds failed during the Brooklyn subway shooting

The security-camera system at the Brooklyn subway station where a gunman shot 10 people malfunctioned, failing to capture footage of the assailant, according to transit officials.

Transportation workers inspected the camera system Sunday at the 36th Street station in Sunset Park—two days before the shooting—and discovered that a faulty fiber-optic cable connection prevented transmission of footage to authorities from the station as well as neighboring stops at 25th and 45th streets, the officials said.

The issue stymied the Police Department and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority as they sought footage of the gunman.
