The world has seen regular outbreaks of Egyptmania but – with the centenary of Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 and the long awaited opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum by the Giza pyramids – there’s likely to be another. But for all the scarabs and retro cartouches being sold by hawkers, Egyptian contemporary design is doing very nicely too.
