I always carry a storage clipboard to jobsites, for sketching. It’s sized for letter paper and has a certain bulk to it, which I can’t do anything about; its dimensions are based on the paper it holds. However, Japanese stationery company Lihit Lab has an alternate design that takes up less space. Their A-2068 clipboard handily folds in half, going from A4 size to A5: A slider on the side controls the folding/unfolding, and allows you to lock it rigid for writing. These run $28, and I’ll grab one to try as soon as I can find a U.S. distributor.
