Legendary musician Stevie Wonder has announced that he will bring his Songs in the Key of Life Performances – 50th Anniversary Tour to Madison Square Garden on Nov. 19. This event, celebrating 50 years since the release of his iconic album Songs in the Key of Life, will feature Wonder’s performance of the album in its entirety.
Since its release in 1976, Songs in the Key of Life has earned massive cultural acclaim and numerous awards, including Wonder’s third Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Its most beloved songs include “Isn’t She Lovely,” “As,” and “Sir Duke.”
The album has also been inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, an honor reserved for recordings that are deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically important, and/or [those that] inform or reflect life in the United States.”
Wonder is regarded among the most influential musicians of the 20th century. At the age of 12, with his song “Fingertips Part 2,” he became the youngest artist to achieve a #1 single. Since then, he has had an enormously successful career spanning six decades and counting. He has released 49 Top 40 singles, 32 #1 singles, and has won a wide range of prestigious awards, including 25 Grammy Awards, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Golden Globe, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
In addition to Wonder’s musical achievements, he is known for his humanitarian efforts, including working towards ending apartheid in South Africa and contributing to the 1985 “We Are The World” fundraiser for African famine relief. In 1981, he released the single “Happy Birthday” to popularize the campaign to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a federal holiday. Additionally, he has been celebrated by the President’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Children’s Diabetes Foundation, and the American Association of People with Disabilities.
