Nearly two decades after the Beastie Boys played their final concert, Mike D is back on the road, this time under his own name. On Wednesday, September 9, Mike D brought his new project, Mike D 5D, to Knockdown Center in Queens for a hometown stop on his first major tour since the death of Beastie Boys bandmate Adam “MCA” Yauch in 2012.

The tour follows the August 28 release of Thank You, Mike D’s first solo album. Joining him in 5D are his sons Skyler and Davis Diamond, along with Eddie Ruscha, Will Graefe and Milo Ruscha. What originally began as a short five-show run has since expanded into a much larger North American and European tour stretching into November.
For the Queens show, Mike D mixed new material from Thank You with Beastie Boys favorites, opening with “Hello Brooklyn” before moving into the new “What We Got.” Songs from the album including “Crypto,” “Make It Stop,” “That’s Right,” “Switch Up” and “Secrets” were mixed throughout the night alongside Beastie Boys classics like “Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun,” “3-Minute Rule” and “Body Movin’.”

Mike D closed the main set with the title track, “Thank You,” before returning with 5D for a two-song encore that ended with “So What’cha Want.” With his sons sharing the stage and the new album at the center of the show, the performance balanced Mike D’s Beastie Boys past with what he’s doing now.
