The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is one of the most popular options among premium travel rewards cards.
As Capital One’s flagship consumer card, the Venture X competes with established products like the American Express Platinum Card® and Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees).
The $395-per-year Venture X not only undercuts its main competitors in terms of an annual fee but also includes valuable perks, like a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit, airport lounge access and 10,000 bonus miles each account anniversary.
If you’re considering adding the Venture X to your wallet, here are answers to eight frequently asked questions.
Can I apply for the Venture X as an existing Venture Rewards cardholder?
Yes, you can apply for the Venture X card even if you currently have the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.
There is one important distinction about welcome bonus eligibility, though. Similar to American Express’s family rules, Capital One has a 48-month restriction on welcome bonuses for cards with lower annual fees.

For example, if you’ve received the Venture X’s welcome bonus within the last 48 months, you won’t be eligible to open a Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card during that period.
The good news for existing Venture Rewards cardholders is that the restriction doesn’t work in reverse. Since the Venture X has a higher annual fee, you can still apply for it and earn its welcome bonus, provided you meet the other eligibility requirements.
That means you could earn the Venture X’s 75,000-mile welcome bonus after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening, even if you already have the Venture Rewards card.

What are the application restrictions for Capital One cards?
Capital One has traditionally limited applicants to one new card every six months, whether personal or business. The issuer is also known to be sensitive to recent credit inquiries. Neither is a hard-and-fast rule, though, and your approval will ultimately depend on your individual credit profile.
You’ll want to be strategic when applying for the Venture X. Imagine this scenario: You’re also interested in a Chase credit card, but Chase’s 5/24 rule means you won’t be approved if you’ve opened five or more personal credit cards across all banks in the past 24 months.
Since the Venture X counts toward that limit, you may want to apply for the Chase card first if you’re approaching the 5/24 threshold.

Can I upgrade to the Venture X as an existing Venture Rewards cardholder?
If you already have the Venture Rewards, you may be able to upgrade to the Venture X. Contact Capital One or check your online account to see whether an upgrade offer is available to you.
Upgrade eligibility varies by account, so an offer available to one cardholder might not be available to another.

Before making the switch, consider whether you should upgrade or apply for the Venture X as a new cardholder. Upgrading generally won’t affect your credit score, and you may even keep the same account number. However, you typically won’t receive a new cardholder welcome bonus when upgrading.
If you’re eligible for the Venture X welcome bonus, you may want to consider applying for the card outright instead.

Can I combine my Capital One miles across multiple cards?
Yes, you can combine your Capital One miles earned on cards such as the Venture Rewards and Venture X.
You can also convert rewards from eligible Capital One cash-back cards into miles. To do so, you’ll need a miles-earning card like the Venture X. For example, $100 in cash back from an eligible Savor card can become 10,000 Capital One miles.
To move your rewards, log in to your Capital One account, navigate to the rewards section and select “Move Rewards.” From there, choose the eligible card you want to move rewards from, then select the card you want to move them to.

What travel and shopping protections does the Venture X offer?
Similar to the Sapphire Reserve, the Venture X is a Visa Infinite credit card and includes a host of protections when using your card, including the following travel protections:
- Lost luggage reimbursement: Up to $3,000 per covered trip if a common carrier loses or damages your luggage (subject to the benefit’s terms).
- Primary rental car insurance: Covers eligible collision or theft losses up to the rental vehicle’s actual cash value (provided its original manufacturer’s suggested retail price was no more than $75,000).
- Trip cancellation and interruption insurance: Up to $2,000 per person for you and select immediate family members for prepaid, nonrefundable common-carrier tickets if your trip is canceled or interrupted for a covered reason.
- Trip delay reimbursement: Up to $500 per person for reasonable expenses like hotel rooms, food, toiletries and clothes when your flight is delayed overnight or by six hours or more.

The card also offers these shopping protections:
- Cellphone protection: By using the card to pay your monthly wireless bill, you’re eligible for up to $800 in coverage per claim (up to two claims and $1,600 per 12-month period; a $50 deductible applies per occurrence).
- Purchase protection: Up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account for eligible purchases.
- Extended warranty: Extends eligible manufacturers’ warranties by an additional year.
- Return protection: Up to $300 per eligible item and $1,000 per account when a retailer won’t accept a return.
Finally, the Venture X also includes access to a Visa Infinite concierge service that can help with travel and dining arrangements, shopping and event information.

What types of rental car benefits and protections do I receive with the Venture X?
The Venture X offers complimentary Hertz President’s Circle status*, which comes with perks such as vehicle upgrades, bonus points on eligible rentals and access to a dedicated customer service line.
To enroll, log in to your Capital One account and follow the Hertz enrollment link in your card benefits. Eligible authorized users can enroll, too. You’ll need to complete this process to receive the status; simply joining Hertz Gold Plus Rewards won’t automatically upgrade you to President’s Circle.

The Venture X also offers primary rental car coverage for eligible rentals paid for with the card. To activate this benefit, pay for the rental with your Venture X and decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver. Coverage can help pay for damage to or theft of the rental vehicle, subject to the benefit’s terms and exclusions.

Is there a fee to add authorized users to the Venture X?
No. You can add up to four authorized users to your Venture X account at no additional cost. However, authorized users do not receive complimentary airport lounge access.

You can add lounge access for eligible authorized users ages 18 and older for $125 per person, per year. This includes access to Capital One Lounges and Landings and Priority Pass Lounges.
What are the authorized user benefits on the Venture X?
Venture X authorized users receive:
- The same travel and shopping protections as the primary cardholder, including cellphone protection
- The ability to earn Capital One miles through spending (to the primary cardholder’s account)
- Hertz President’s Circle status*
- Lounge access (if the primary cardholder pays $125 per year per authorized user)
They do not receive their own $300 annual travel credit, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit or 10,000-mile anniversary bonus.
Bottom line
The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers a mix of travel perks, lounge access and shopping protections for a $395 annual fee.
If you already have the Venture Rewards card, you may be able to upgrade to the Venture X or apply for it as a new cardholder. If you’re eligible for the welcome bonus, applying for a new card could be more rewarding than upgrading.
