    Brilliant Design for a Specialty Construction Tool

    This crazy-looking PRO-AM PA-5019H tool, by Japanese manufacturer Toyomitsu, is designed for construction workers working with steel or industrial equipment. An example of a workflow: Imagine a worker erecting steel scaffolding. They need to join two steel support elements using a bracket. In Japan, 17mm and 21mm are common bolt head sizes, and thus the tool has both, one on each face. A switch lets you change the ratcheting direction. In this workflow the worker does not completely tighten the bracket to the first element, but only snugs it up. That’s because the bracket’s other set of holes may not neatly correspond with the holes in the second element-to-be-fastened. Thus the hammerhead edges. The worker can tap the bracket or the element to make fine adjustments (i.e. the hammer’s not designed for wailing on things). Furthermore, the pointy butt end serves as an alignment spike, also known as a drift pin. You stick these through the hole of both the bracket and the element-to-be-fastened, getting them to align long enough for you to insert a bolt in the hole next door.This is the kind of tool that could only have been designed by a very observant and imaginative designer—or by a worker themself.
