Gov’t Mule and Ziggy Marley brought two distinct musical worlds together on Wednesday, September 23, kicking off their Dreaming The Same Dream Tour at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City.
The 16-date co-headlining run marks the first full tour together for Warren Haynes and Marley, though the two have a history that stretches back years. They previously collaborated on “Dreaming the Same Dream,” which appeared on the Warren Haynes Band’s Live at the Moody Theater and ultimately gave the tour its name.
DJ YOLA got the evening started behind the decks and returned between sets, providing music during the changeover between the two headliners.
“I think a lot of Mule fans will be hearing Ziggy for the first time and a lot of Ziggy fans will be hearing Mule for the first time,” Haynes said.
Marley opened his set with “Jah We Give Glory” and delivered a mix of solo material, songs from his Melody Makers years and selections from his father Bob Marley’s catalog. Highlights included “Love Is My Religion,” “Rebellion Rises,” “Justice” and “Look Who’s Dancing,” along with “Racism Is A Killa” and the title track from his new album, Brightside. He also paid tribute to his father with classics including “One Love” and “Could You Be Loved.”
Gov’t Mule followed with the blues, Southern rock and extended improvisation that have defined the band for more than three decades. Opening with “Steppin’ Lightly,” Warren Haynes and company worked through a set that mixed longtime Mule favorites with blues covers and plenty of room to stretch out.
Highlights included “Revolution Come, Revolution Go” and a sprawling “Game Face / Mountain Jam / Game Face,” which also worked in a tease of The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood.” The band reached into the blues with Memphis Slim’s “Mother Earth” and Robert Johnson’s “32-20 Blues,” while “Dreaming Out Loud” arrived following a drum intro.
After closing the main set with “Time to Confess,” Gov’t Mule returned for an encore of “Mule,” bringing the opening night of the Dreaming The Same Dream Tour to a close.
From New York, the Dreaming The Same Dream Tour heads south through Asheville, Raleigh and Richmond before continuing through Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Texas.
