The Bride Wore Vintage ’90s Valentino and Her Grandmother’s Bracelet for Her Beachside Wedding in Mexico

When it came to Sarah’s wedding fashion, she enlisted the help of her high school friend, Molly Howard, who is one of the founders of La Ligne. She wanted a vintage dress—“something unique with a story,” she says—and ended up getting most of her looks from Raffe Vintage, including a vintage 1990s Valentino dress that served as her ceremony dress. “Even my flower girl—one of my best friend’s daughters—wore a vintage Dolce & Gabbana that I found.”

For her jewelry, she wore a mix of borrowed and new pieces. She got creative with her ceremony earrings. “I loved my wedding dress so much that I couldn’t find the right earrings. I finally decided to take two of the flower appliqués from the dress and wear them as earrings, which I loved,” she says.

“The other really special piece was my grandmother’s bracelet,” Sarah says. “She carried it with her when she fled France during World War II, and my dad gave it to me the morning of our first ceremony in East Hampton.” At first, Sarah and her dad couldn’t figure out how to open the clasp. She remembers saying, “I wish Mini were here,” and her dad replying, “She is.”

“Right at that moment, the clasp opened.” Sarah says, adding: “I am not a superstitious person but that really melted me.” She wore it for their civil ceremony in East Hampton, and at their rehearsal party in Los Cabos, taking a piece of her grandmother with her throughout the wedding.

At the Los Cabos beach ceremony, Sarah walked down the aisle to one of David’s favorite songs, “Billie (Loving Arms)” by Fred Again. “David and I have a very small Venn diagram of music we both like (he’s a Phish guy, I love Bleachers), so I think he was really surprised I walked to Fred Again. I saw his face light up and he immediately put his hands in the air when the song came on and my dad and I started walking,” Sarah says. “My dad and I ended up dancing most of the way down the aisle, which was perfect.” The couple’s chosen uncles, Amos and Rae, served as officiants. They read vows they had written to each other, and did a version of the Jewish tradition of seven blessings.

After the ceremony, they held a cocktail hour with a raw bar and jazz trio, dinner, dancing, and a disco after-party for which everyone changed into disco outfits.

Looking back on the day now, Sarah says: “I have dreamed of being able to walk down the aisle with my dad, who is 90, my whole life. Getting to walk down with my dad—and really, he danced down with me—to David, surrounded by all the humans I love was one of the best moments of my life.”

Our chosen uncles married us at our civil ceremony. It was a short, intimate, loving ceremony with just our parents and Sarah’s childhood dog, Fionn, on the beach where she grew up. This was right before we put on our rings and finally became husband and wife! Shockingly, Sarah let me pick out our wedding bands—I went with simple gold, matching, engraved with lines from a poem we both like. Even more shockingly, she loved what I picked out.”—David
