    Pierre-Emmanuel Lyet’s “Repose”

For the cover of the August 3, 2026, issue, the French artist Pierre-Emmanuel Lyet tried to capture both the delicious and the sluggish qualities of summer’s afternoon heat. “I spend every summer in the Drôme Provençale, in the South of France, and I’ve always been fascinated by the quality of light there,” Lyet said. “After lunch, the heat can become almost overwhelming. The only thing left to do is to stay still and enjoy the moment while it lasts.”
