Daniel Caesar brought his “Son of Spergy” Tour to Barclays Center on July 30, giving Brooklyn its only New York stop on the run and turning the arena into a sea of lights and singing. Fans lined up outside hours before doors opened, ready to spend a sold-out night with one of R&B’s biggest stars who also blends together soul and gospel. Faye Webster opened the show, easing the crowd into the night before Caesar went on.
From the moment he stepped on stage, it was clear this was going to be a special night. Caesar opened with “Rain Down” and moved into “Call on Me,” setting a tone that was equal parts intimate and euphoric. Despite dealing with an injury to one of his lower legs, he moved through the set with an ease and great warmth that never let the pain show.
Daniel Caesar is currently on tour promoting his latest album, Son of Spergy, which confronts masculinity, faith, and self-importance with a lot of gospel influence.
Caesar performed acoustic versions of multiple songs including “Transform” and “Streetcar” that let his voice carry the room. Between songs, he joked with the crowd and seemed genuinely moved by the reception, at one point early on telling the audience that New York is like a second home to him, right behind Toronto.
The encore turned into one of the night’s most memorable stretches, with Caesar taking song requests straight from the crowd and delivering acoustic versions of “Blessed,” “We Find Love,” “Superpowers,” and “Loose.” These final moments felt less like a huge arena show and more like a room full of friends, with Caesar laughing, joking, and clearly soaking in the moment.
